Question 1: How does your short film represent social groups or issues?

The thriller short film "Interlinked" that we produced depicts a serial killer who targets victims from different social groups, including race, gender, and sexual orientation. The film aimed to address issues related to discrimination, stereotyping, and prejudice. The serial killer in the film targeted victims from various social groups, highlighting how people are often stereotyped and discriminated against based on their identity (although our killer had no agenda against specific people). The victims included a gay man, a Hispanic woman, and an Arab man, among others. Through these characters, the film explored how individuals from different social groups are often marginalized and subjected to discrimination in society. Furthermore, the film depicted how the media and law enforcement often treat victims from different social groups differently. The Hispanic victim, for example, was portrayed as being initially dismissed by the police, who assumed that she was involved in illegal activities when looking at the address provided by the grieving husband, highlighting issues of police brutality and racial profiling. The film also explored the psychological impact of discrimination and prejudice on individuals. One of the main characters, a bystander of the serial killer's attack on his wife, struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to the trauma he experienced. The film highlighted the importance of support and therapy for victims of discrimination and prejudice. In conclusion, "Interlinked" effectively represented social groups and the issues they face. Through the portrayal of the serial killer's victims, the film highlighted the various forms of discrimination and prejudice that exist in society. It also emphasized the psychological impact of these issues on individuals and the need for support and therapy for survivors.

Question 2: How do the elements of your short film work together to create a sense of ‘branding’?

"Interlinked" used various elements to create a sense of branding, which helped enhance the film's overall impact. The film's title, "Interlinked," served as a key element in creating a sense of branding. The title suggested that there was a connection between the killer's victims, which helped to create an air of mystery and intrigue. This sense of interconnectedness was reinforced throughout the film, as each victim was shown to be linked to the others in some way, whether through their identities or their experiences. A specific color scheme also helped create a sense of branding for the film. The film predominantly used shades of red, black, and white, which helped to create a sense of tension and suspense. The use of these colors, along with the film's dark lighting and ominous music, helped to create a foreboding atmosphere that added to the film's overall impact. The film's marketing materials also helped to create a sense of branding. The film's poster featured the killer's signature weapon, a pair of knives, which helped to establish a visual identity for the film. The use of a tagline, "It all leads back to you," also reinforced the film's theme of interconnectedness. Overall, "Interlinked" effectively used various elements to create a sense of branding that enhanced the film's impact. The title, color scheme, lighting, music, and marketing materials all worked together to create a cohesive and memorable brand identity for the film.

One way the film engaged with the audience was through suspense and tension. From the opening scene, the film established an ominous tone and kept the audience on the edge of their seats. As the story progressed, the tension continued to build, with each victim's fate hanging in the balance. The film's use of jump scares and unexpected plot twists also helped to keep the audience engaged and invested in the story. The film also engaged with the audience through its exploration of social issues. By depicting victims from different social groups, the film addressed issues of discrimination, prejudice, and marginalization. These themes resonated with the audience and sparked important conversations about these issues. The film's characters also helped to engage with the audience. Question 4: How did your research inform your short film and the way it uses or challenges conventions?

Our research played a crucial role in informing our thriller short film "Interlinked". By studying the conventions of the thriller genre and researching real-life cases of serial killers, we were able to create a film that effectively used and challenged these conventions. One of the key ways that our research informed the film was in its use of suspense and tension. Through our analysis of other thriller films, we learned about the importance of pacing and building tension throughout the narrative. We used this knowledge to craft a story that kept the audience on the edge of their seats, using jump scares and unexpected plot twists to keep them attracted. Our research also informed the film's exploration of social issues. By studying real-life cases of serial killers, we learned about the ways that discrimination and prejudice can manifest in violent behavior. We used this knowledge to create a film that depicted victims from different social groups, highlighting the various forms of discrimination and marginalization that exist in society. In addition to using conventions of the thriller genre, our research also helped us to challenge them. For example, while many thriller films depict the killer as a mysterious and elusive figure, giving multiple suspects for the audience to guess who the killer was, we chose to center on one character in the film. This allowed us to focus on the killer's motivations and psychology, rather than building up a sense of mystery around their identity. Furthermore, we challenged conventions by depicting the survivors of the killer's attacks as relatable and sympathetic characters. This humanized the victims and allowed us to explore the psychological impact of their trauma, rather than simply using them as plot devices. Overall, our research informed every aspect of our short film "Interlinked", from its use and challenge of conventions to its exploration of social issues. By using our research to inform our creative decisions, we were able to create a film that effectively engaged and challenged the audience.
