Title Design Research: Aquaman
1. What titles are displayed in the opening sequence?
The title sequence in Aquaman starts off by showing the director of the movie. The sequence continues on to show the people behind the screenplay and story of the movie. Afterwards, the opening shows the producers of the movie and what the character is based on. Finally, the opening sequence shows the names of the actors who will be starring in the movie, and the company who owns everything (weird that they put that in the end).
2. What connotations do the images carry?
In the opening sequence of Aquaman, the images carried lots of hidden connotations that connect to the main character. The images in the opening sequence show Aquaman’s main hometown Atlantis, and how the entire place has been run down since his departure. The images also show how the people of Atlantis are oppressed by their current ruler, who is secretly Aquaman’s brother. Putting all this together, it connects to the deeper meaning of the Aquaman movie, of how Aquaman needs to suppress his feelings for humans (and his brother) and go back to his rightful throne, even if he has to fight his brother for it. This is clearly giving action vibes, but DC did good in incorporating other genres in some scenes.
3. How is the genre reinforced through the symbolic and technical codes of the outset?
It’s kind of hard to reinforce Aquaman into the action genre, but there are some scenes that hint towards it. In the opening sequence you can see huge sharks being ridden by Atlantian people, seemingly going to attack somewhere. This scene incorporates action because honestly I don’t think they are going to make a romantic comedy about how Atlantis is attacking humans. The biggest hint however is when the DC logo pops up into the frame. DC is known for doing ONLY action movies, and I mean only, you can scroll through all of DC’s movies and you will not find a single other genre. These two hints are what reinforce the genre through symbolism.
4. What conventions are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
In the opening sequence there is a low angle shot of Aquaman standing below an entire army of Atlantian soldiers, making him look like a bug that’s about to be crushed. In the beginning of the opening sequence there is a wide shot of Aquaman’s birthplace (a lighthouse) standing next to water, this is an establishing shot, since it shows where the camera will zoom into next, the ocean.
